The State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg

The State Russian Museum hasthe world’s largest collection ofRussian art. It was initiated bythe Emperor Alexander III in1895 and opened in 1898. The museum is housed in the Mikhailovsky Palace and contains over 400000 exhibits in different parts of the Palace. It covers all major periods and trends inthe history ofRussian art. Just the four rooms with Russian Icons make this museum worth a visit and, for example, the displayed works of Russian impressionists are as good as those from the French painters, but obviously avoided becoming as famous! Most visitors that are on a short visit to St. Petersburg will pay a visit to the Hermitage. In my opinion, the Russian Museum is just as much worth a visit; the collection is beautiful and it is by far less intense than the Hermitage, there are hardly any queues and far less crowds inside.
